On May 11, 2008, Minnesota reached its 150th anniversary as the 32nd state in the United States of America. Beginning in January 2008, the Sesquicentennial will be a yearlong, statewide commemoration and a catalyst, to learn from our past and connect all of us as Minnesotans in creating a thriving, innovative future.

Orlin and his Oxcart In St Paul...

Orlin and Mandy Ostby and their family have been walking the Pembina Oxcart Trail since July 1, with ox and cart, just like 150 years ago when Minnesota was becoming a state. 400 miles in 40 days. They’ll be arriving at the opening day parade of the Minnesota State Fair, August 21, to help commemorate 150 years of Minnesota statehood. In doing so, they also complete a circle begun 50 years ago by Orlin’s friend, Delmar Hagen, who made the same journey for the Statehood Centennial in 1958. We’re so proud of their efforts, to honor Minnesota and the critical role that the ox-cart trails played in Minnesota’s history and development, and to pay tribute to the people who endured so many hardships to help shape the promising future we live in today.
