We invite you to come to Blue Earth, MN and experience life in a small but progressive rural community. Blue Earth is located in Faribault County, in the heart of south central Minnesota, and is considered to have some of the richest soil in the United States.
Blue Earth was named after the Blue Earth River, which encircles the town. The Indians named it Makotah or Blue Earth because of the rare mineral "Illite" that is found in veins high in the riverbanks. Blue Earth is also where East meets West at the site of the historic Golden Spike (strip of gold concrete) Interstate-90 completion of the United State's longest highway which runs from Seattle to Boston. You can read all about the event at the Rest Stops near Blue Earth.
Welcoming all to the city is the 55 foot Jolly Green Giant Statue. Folks who come to see him often sit on his foot (which is a size 78 shoe) and have their picture taken. A stop at the Little Red Tourist Information Barn and Gift Shop completes the visit. Blue Earth's 'Giant Museum' will be opening later this summer. It will cover history of the canning factory in Blue Earth and showcase the largest collection of Jolly Green Giant memorabilia in the country.
We also invite you to sip on a frosty mug of root beer at the Cedar Inn one of the few remaining drive-in restaurants in the mid-west.
Playing a round of Disc Golf would be a fun way to get some exercise or hiking down the Unity Trail and doing a little birding. We could also visit the historic Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal which houses the first stained glass window in Minnesota or the beautifully restored James B. Wakefiled House. You could also stroll down main street and do a little shopping at our unique specialty shops.
